Hey! I am Martina, a fashion student based in Barcelona and Milan. I specialize in crocheting and knitting.

my story

About me

Once upon a time, in the vibrant streets of Sicily, a 12-year-old Martina Spina discovered the art of crochet, guided by the skilled hands of her beloved grandma. Life's twists led her to Switzerland, where crochet took a back seat until the pandemic rekindled Martina's creative flame. A yellow mohair bucket hat marked the reawakening, turning crochet into a daily meditation.

Fast forward to 2023, and Thorny emerges in the lively atmosphere of Spain. Born from the fusion of dreams of designer recognition and the practical need for survival, Thorny is Martina's testament to the belief that passion can be a livelihood. Martina, a sexy wise grandma at heart, defies stereotypes, turning crochet into an art form that exudes sensuality.

Thorny offers a unique blend of craftsmanship and sustainability. Every piece, whether ready-to-wear or custom, is meticulously crafted by hand. The future of Thorny is sustainable, using recycled yarn from old garments whenever possible to reduce waste and lower the demand for new materials.

The first Thorny customers were Martina's Master's degree colleagues, demonstrating trust in her capabilities and a shared commitment to slow fashion. Purchasing a Thorny piece is a choice for slow fashion, reducing the demand for fast fashion and unsustainable materials.

Thorny celebrates inclusivity, embracing all differences, and unapologetically stands against bigotry and racism. Fashion is for everybody, and Thorny is a safe haven for those who believe in love, acceptance, and uniqueness.

Meet Martina Spina, the founder of Thorny—a globetrotter, a quirky soul, and a crochet virtuoso. Raised in an artistic family, Martina inherited the love for creating from her dad and the patience for handcrafting from her mum. A move to Switzerland at 12 shaped her uniqueness, teaching her to embrace her quirks and follow her heart, unburdened by societal norms.

Thorny's mission is to craft timeless pieces that transcend trends. Uniqueness, sustainability, and authenticity form the core values, ensuring each handmade creation is a one-of-a-kind expression. The journey hasn't been without challenges. Martina battled self-doubt, but the mantra "Trust the process" became her guiding light.

As we move forward, Thorny's horizon is bright and sustainable. The upcoming ReFiber platform will allow users to sell old yarn-based garments by weight, contributing to a circular fashion ecosystem.

The call to action is simple—share your Thorny story. Post your pictures, videos, and TikToks featuring your Thorny pieces, and become a part of the Thorny narrative. Your uniqueness, just like Thorny, deserves to be celebrated.
